Strength for the Next Season

You need to think about training for sport well ahead of the next season. As a cricket player, I’ve realised that I need to improve my strength for the next season so I can hit the ball harder and score more runs. So I’ve begun to think about how my work in the gym will result in greater success and more enjoyment when the season starts in April.

Arm strength is an obvious area to improve, as triceps and forearms are key muscles when using a bat. Tricep extensions and reverse bicep curl are both great exercises to help batsmen become stronger. By increasing the time under tension, I can make the muscles work harder and build strength more effectively.

Core strength is also critical for many sports, including cricket. You’ll often hear commentators talk about players “maintaining their shape”, and this requires a powerful core. Without this shape, you lose the correct technique and will not be able to hit the ball hard.

To improve my core, I’ve been doing core circuits that include planks, side planks and bicycle crunches. Core exercises are not always considered the most fun, but by keeping in mind the reason why I am doing them, I’ve been much more motivated to train my core and am looking forward to (hopefully) seeing the results when I start playing again.

If you are looking to improve your performance in a summer sport, or simply want to enjoy playing a little more, then why not contact me and see how I could help you improve your strength and conditioning with a personalised programme?
